DJ CLK, a main player behind the Bring The Noise events, gives us the low down about DJ'ing, partying, and what's in store for the future...
Hi Paul, thanks for taking time to speak to us at EM. I understand that BTN is your baby. Can you tell us how and why you decided to get into event promotion?
No problem at all!!! Well before BTN myself and my partner in crime (and good friend) Paulie started with a local night in Wiltshire called Pulse & Relentless where we had the likes of Nick Rafferty, Scott Bond, Matt Hardwick, and others headline. There was always a buzz around the South West for trance, tech & hard dance so I started playing around local bars and doing all-day parties on bank holidays and we always pulled in good crowds. So after that we created Pulse as our first major club promotion. Unfortunately for the night but good for me, I ended up going to the white isle to DJ for the season of 2006 so the night stopped. Last year in May when I returned from Asia I got back in touch with Paulie and talked about my vision for creating the number one South West trance, tech-trance and hard-dance promotion. The name Bring The Noise was a slogan I kind of used when out partying with friends and of course from there, we went to work!
Where do you usually hold your events? I know you guys are based mainly in Bristol but didn’t you put on a party in Westbury recently? Any notable venues on the horizon for future events?
Well the good thing about Bring The Noise is we will happily take on any venue, big or small. It won’t phase us!! But to be fair, right now we are still finding somewhere to call home. Club Ice in Westbury where we launched Bring The Noise in July this year, was a terrific venue, even perfect in ways. But a little out the way! We would defiantly love to do a night there again though. I suppose Bristol is looked at as the capital of the South West in a way and from speaking with some of the mainstream DJ’s agents, they all agree that Bristol is an excellent place crying out for a good trance night. So, we hunted around and we have found the Warehouse which is located on Prince Street. It's a really good vibe, good size, and the right style for what we want to create. So fingers crossed we have found our new home. Going forward, I’d love to see BTN on a much larger scale, maybe somewhere like the Syndicate, maybe even a Bring The Noise festival one day!!!! You never know, I’m an ambitious guy!
What would you say the music policy for BTN is? Is BTN strictly for the hard-dance purist or do you welcome DJ’s and clubbers who prefer the tamer styles too?
That’s the best thing about Bring The Noise, we can cover all bases. Room one is covered by our residents. For example, Jason Kinetic is the BTN producer/label manager and head of promotion & design for Bring The Noise. He always brings driving tech trance to the table. Neil Hedges who is the other half of Tab Delimited DJ’s (along with myself) brings more melodic vocal trance. And myself, I try to come up with something new and creative any set I play, incorporating old skool trance/techno favourites into hard trance, through electro tech house... a real journey of high octance enjoyment. Now in room two we like anything from dub step, drum and bass, electro-house, funky-house etc. For example at BTN 1 we had Nicky Blackmarket down and for BTN 2 we have fresh sounds from the local dubstep talent. You want something for BTN we will provide it with style!!
I know you had the legend that is Anne Savage down for your last party which was a smash. Are there any notable artists you would like to have down for future events?
Yeah she was absolutely fantastic as always, we really enjoyed having her down. It was our launch party and her birthday so there was two reasons to celebrate. We always think hard about the BTN DJ’s we bring down, we have a really good resident line up with myself, Jason Kinetic and Neil Hedges so we just look to strengthen that really. A really good friend (and Passion resident) GIO plays for us which is always exciting and for the BTN 2 event in December we have Slinky resident and old Tidy favourite, Lee Haslam coming down to grace the decks which we are all really excited about! I Haven’t seen him for years so it will be great to see him and spin some tunes together. Going forward we are looking at Eddie Halliwell, John O Callaghan, Kutski and many more.
Slight change of focus from the event side of things now. What can you tell us about yourself Paul? Where have you played as CLK over the years Any notable gigs that stick in your mind?
Notable gigs.....trying to remember them is hard enough LOL! No seriously, every gig is memorable. I suppose one of the biggest and proudest moments was coming 2nd in a national DJ competition back in 2004. It was just a really good series of events and was lots of fun. After that I travelled over to the white isle of Ibiza where I headed up as the resident for the Tidy vs Extreme Euphoria after party, Lolas after party and Hush.
Then I was resident for Pulse and Relentless and having the pleasure of playing with Scott Bond, John Kelly, Matt Hardwick, Nick Rafferty and the Disco Brothers. Going forward I also had the pleasure of playing many nights across the UK but my main focus now is Bring The Noise!! We have the night which so far is a great success!! I am working with Jason Kinetic on my first record release for November on Bring The Noise records, DJ CLK – Miles. And of course, I'm always pushing myself forward for bigger and better opportunities to play any nights around the globe. BTN WORLD DOMINATION!!!
You’ve recently joined Mantis & Jason Kinetic on the Class A Sessions radio show (now hosted by our good selves at EM I might add!). What plans do you guys have for the future of the show?
Yeah I was really pleased to be asked by the boys. Obviously good mates with them out of the spotlight but after my guest mix stirred a good reaction from listeners they asked me to become resident for the show. Being a fan of the show anyway prompted me, but to be fair, I was delighted. Our next (and my first show as resident) is November 7th @ 7-9pm. The show is now two hours which promises more cracking music. The show will also be up for download so you can load up your iPods for random enjoyment. Apart from that, just expect quality tunage, wicked banter. and good times from the three of us!!!!!
Not content with running events and DJ’ing I hear you run a DJ agency too! What can you tell us about that?
Well Tab delimited DJ’s is again a little project of mine. The original and headlining duo Tab Delimited is I and Neil Hedges. What we are doing is branching out and offering any up and coming DJ’s to join our roster and play at our Bring The Noise events as well as promoting their abilities through the Tab Delimited DJ’s agency. I know as much as anyone how hard it is to get heard as an artist and with Bring The Noise firing on all cylinders and getting bigger and bigger we want to help new and aspiring DJ’s come forward. Finally, can you give us a sneak preview of what you have in store for your next event on the 18th December (except of course that it’s gonna rock!)? Well its Christmas time! A time to be merry!!! So expect lots of Xmas crackers in store for BTN 2. Jason Kinetic dressed as Santa Clause and Lee Haslam as Xmas pudding :) An early Xmas present with the first play of DJ CLK – Miles. Full throttle trance and tech-trance from me & GIO. Some home grown dirty dubstep from our local residents, good beer, good new venue, and just really good times. 18th December at the Warehouse Bristol..... Bring The Noise!!!!!!!
